Introducing Elkader Chiropractor Dr. Timothy J Kane
My family and friends thought I was crazy! Why would I go back for four more years of college at the age of thirty-six?
It was really quite easy. 1997 was a horrific year for me but one that would change my life forever.
You know they say things happen in threes!! In October of 1997, I was reeling from the third and potentially final traumatic event in a four month period. These events were traumatic both physically and emotionally. It all began in July of ’97, when I was nearly the fatal victim in an auto accident in which my car was t-boned by a full size pickup truck traveling 65 mph. I spent nearly a week in the hospital and then two more weeks at home in a recliner. When I returned to work at the drug store (that I was managing) it was on a very limited basis. It took nearly seven weeks until I was back to working my regular schedule following Labor Day weekend. Just in time for the second blow – the unexpected death of my father, two days after Labor Day and three days after celebrating his 70th birthday. My father had always been my pillar of strength. I loved him dearly. Some days I truly regret not having the proper amount of time to deal with this loss, because one month later I was dealt the third blow – divorce papers. Divorce is one thing, not being able to kiss my beautiful 4 year old twin daughters good night, every night, is another. That was absolutely devastating.
It was during the period after the auto accident and through the loss of my father that I realized I needed to find something more meaningful to do with my life. I needed something much bigger. I just didn’t know what. I think it would be safe to say I was, at the least, a little depressed. I truly understand about hitting rock bottom, I was there emotionally. It took a year and a half before it slapped me in the face. I have Dr. Mark Kauffman to thank for that slap in the face. It was an innocent visit from Mark, a former colleague (and future classmate) one afternoon in my New York Life office that turned on the light. Shortly thereafter I was listening to tapes by Dr. Guy Riekman and visiting the birthplace of chiropractic, Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport. The rest they say, is history. I got what we call in chiropractic – The Big Picture!!
Approximately 6 months prior to graduation from Palmer I started investigating a practice in Elkader. I eventually purchased that practice. On February 1st of 2004, I began practicing chiropractic.
My practice philosophy is this. In addition to helping new patients with whatever ailments they initially seek care for, I also want to help them age gracefully through wellness care. I think deep down we all want that. I attempt to do this by getting patients to understand, which is the key, why the many little things we do day in and day out can either work for us -or- against us. All said and done, I want to slow down the inevitable degeneration of not just the spine, but all of the joints, cells, and tissues. This is the sole purpose I decided to establish this website. I want to give patients a resource to educate themselves.
Planning for future health is no different than planning for a nest egg at retirement. You can't hope for it to happen, you need to put into it daily. In fact, I would argue it is more important to put into your bodies' "bank account" then it is your retirement plan. If you put everything into the financial side and nothing into the health side, you will retire with plenty of money, however, a worn out body that will not allow you to enjoy your savings. In many cases, a persons health is so bad at retirement that the poor health actually steals from their retirement. No different than retirement savings, the younger you start working on your future health, the better chance of your plan succeeding. The choice is yours, if you are interested in planning for future health, congratulations you're in a great place, chiropractic is a great way to start.
Away from the office my time is spent with my wife Julie, whom I married in the Summer of 2005. Julie and I went to the same high school in Dubuque where we did not know each other due to classes of around 500 students. So how did a chiropractor in Elkader, Iowa discover this lovely, successful, business woman from his old home town -- via a dating service on the Internet! Julie's many projects and hobbies fill most of my free time in some shape or form. The biggest of them being her enormous project of renovating the 137 year old Clayton County Jail into our residence and an Inn. In addition to helping her with a lot of the initial demolition, my largest contribution has been the building and maintenance of her website from scratch. You can take a peak at it at: www.elkaderjailhouseinn.com. I have twin daughters Lauren & Leah who live in the Des Moines metro area with their mother and Julie's children Ethan (and his wife Megan) who live in Peoria, Illinois and Kayla who is a high caliber rugby player at UNI in Cedar Falls where she is team co-captain. In addition to our children we also have a cat (Autumn), an Alexandrian parrot (Zach), a young Great Dane (Merlin) plus four horses.
I also enjoy golfing, trout fishing the streams of northeast Iowa and camping at Yellow River State Forrest with Julie, her horses and Merlin. By the way, you do not see exercise on this list of what I enjoy. Like most people, honestly I don't enjoy it, I do it because it is important.
Enough about me! How can we help you with today’s safe and natural chiropractic care? I consider myself an excellent listener and hope I get the opportunity to meet you in person and discuss your specific health challenge. Give our office a call or email me with the link below.
